The blank slate of the Spaghetti Western presets is a moderately overdriven tone that responds well to your guitar’s volume control and playing dynamics. Dig in for a medium-gain crunch rhythm tone or play lightly for clean parts. The basic tone of this preset is made up of the Vox AC30 Fawn amp head with a combined Blue Bell / Deluxe cab combo. The stock tone is dialed up with plenty of spring verb that I’ve placed between the amp and cab.

Footswitch 1 toggles between a long, clean spring reverb sound, and a shorter, darker in tone, and slightly distorted sound. Spring reverb units were sometimes used heading into the front of an amplifier and so I’ve added a Kinky Boost (EP Booster) that’ll engage with FS1 to help simulate this without actually going in front of a distorting amp.

Footswitch 2 will engage a Boss DS-1 (Deez One Vintage) for a bright distorted tone. In the favorites folder, I’ve also dialed in settings for the Ratatouille Dist (ProCo Rat model) that you can swap in here. Make sure you pick the right version for your pickups. I recommend switching to the bridge pickup and plucking hard right next to the bridge.


Footswitch 3 toggles between two different tone in the AC30 amp head. The first setting (how the preset is recalled - without FS3 engaged) is cleaner, brighter, and tighter. By pressing FS3, overdrive is increasing, the tone becomes more balanced with more low end, and the sag parameter increases to simulate more power amp distortion.

In the Psychedelic Surf presets, I’ve aimed for a tone somewhere in between Dick Dale and Mark Speer from Khruangbin (one of my all-time favorite musicians). I went with the Grammatico amp and cab model (slightly hotter version of a Blues Deluxe) for this sound, though a Deluxe might actually be a bit more accurate to Mark’s tone. He plays flatwound strings and uses a Boss DS-1 on at all times. For most people, this combination wouldn’t work with roundwound strings. Dick Dale’s tone is pretty straightforward, so I’ve focused on nailing his clean and overdriven tone, and dedicating the effects to Mark’s sound.

Footswitch 1 toggles parameters in the Spring Reverb block. The initial setting has a long decay, is darker in tone, and is less present in the mix. Engage FS1 for a shorter, brighter, reverb that is equal in volume to the dry tone - like a whip.

Footswitch 2 will engage a fixed wah. I’ve taken time to find a setting that pushes the amp in a certain way but of course feel free to explore the position parameter to find other sounds. You can also replace this effect with a Rat or DS-1 from the favorites folder if you’d prefer a secondary gain stage.

Footswitch 3 brings up both drive parameters in the amp block, while at the same time boosting the tone and cutting the bass and master volume controls. The result is a bright, moderate gain tone suited perfectly for the genre. The stock tone is set up relatively clean with just a bit of drive. I threw a Deluxe compressor at the end of the chain (always on) to help with simulating the increased natural sustain you get when cranking a clean Fender amp.

Footswitch 4 will engage a delay. In the Spahetti Western presets, triggers a slapback tape delay, which has been placed in front of the amp block for some grit. In the PsychoSurf presets, it’ll bring in a tape delay that I’ve tone matched with the settings Mark likes to use on his El Capistan.

Footswitch 5 is set to momentary mode (meaning that it’ll only be active as long as you hold down the footswitch. This will max out (or at least nearly max out) the feedback on the tape delay. It also increases the stereo spread.

Footswitch 6 is a 3.5db solo boost.

Footswitch 7 is a tremolo. True stereo and dual mono versions are available in the favoerites folder.

Footswitch 8 is a phaser. In the favorites folder, you have your choice between a slow MXR Phase 90, a trippy Electro Harmonix Small Stone, and Mark Speer's Boos PH-3 settings.

Fixed Wah - This is not a traditional wah that you would control with an expression. Mark Speer often switches his Crybaby on and leaves it set somewhere in the middle. This is my attempt at finding that sound. It pushes the amps in a unique way.

Boss Phaser - I’ve modeled this phaser after Mark’s setting on his Boss PH-3. I used the old Legacy Panned Phaser model, which has an interesting effect when summed down to mono in front of an amp head.

EHX Phaser - This is meant to model my go-to sound with the Electro Harmonix Small Stone.

MXR Phaser - A very slowly modulating MXR Phase 90 setting.

Tremolo - Dual M - All of the effects after the amp models in these presets are stereo, but I’ve made sure that they’re fine in mono. Tremolos are not, so this is a stereo block that doesn’t have any difference in the signal from left to right. It’ll make sure that all of the effects prior to it remain in stereo but still itself has mono compatibility.

Tremolo - Dual S - The presets come with the dual mono tremolo mentioned above, but if you’d like to switch it out for a true stereo effect, here you go. Just remember that if you ever need to sum down to mono, this effect will cancel itself out.

Rat - In previous versions of this preset bundle, I was using a Rat distortion. Here are some settings that’ll work with the amp models in both presets. I’ve saved various versions depending on which preset (pickup type) you’re using it with.

DS-1 - This is the distortion model that comes in the Spaghetti presets. Again, I’ve saved various versions depending on which preset (pickup type) you’re using it with.

Slapback Delay - The slapback delay from the Spaghetti Western presets.

Tape/Mod Delay - The modulated tape delay from the PsychoSurf presets.
